Experiment
Three-dimensional Marangoni convections

Primary investigator

Category
Fluid Sciences

Main research area
Marangoni convection

Objectives
Objectives:
Marangoni convection cells generated by mass transfer in the liquid bulk around a bubble had been observed in previous microgravity experiments. The aim of this experiment was to assess the influence of the bubble diameter on the convective patterns.

ESA SP-1132

Experiment procedure
Experimental procedure and results:

In microgravity, air bubbles were created between two pipes in three containers of 4 cm in inner diameter and in depth filled with a 3 vol % acetone-water solution. The distance between the pipes was 3.5 and 7 mm .... (full text)

Results
Large torus-shaped convective patterns developed quickly around the 7 mm and the 5 mm bubbles (fig.1). The velocities close to the interface were of the order of 3 cm/s. In contrast, convective flows started only slowly around the 3 mm bubble and were rather unstable. .... (full text)
